Here’s a list of some licenses and permits:

  • Get your company registered - as a proprietorship or a partnership.

  • Obtain GST registration within 30 days of starting a business, based on the criteria under the GST Act.

  • Get Udyog Aadhaar registration - this will help you claim subsidies and schemes provided by the Government for small businesses.

  • For a food business, you need the FSSAI (Food Safety And Standard Authority Of India) Central License, FSSAI State License, and FSSAI State Registration.

  • To start an import/export business, you will need the Import Export Code issued by the DGFT (Director General Of Foreign Trade) - you must have a PAN and a current account in a bank.

  • You will have to apply for a Shop And Establishment Act License which is issued by State Governments and varies across states. (This is called the Gumasta license in Maharashtra).

  • Businesses like insurance, financial services, might also need approval from regulatory bodies like IRDAI, RBI, etc.

  • You might also need to take permits from the fire department, the pollution control board or even the local healthcare system.

Make sure you renew them periodically and maintain them!
